The very first Hamburg Comics Festival took place exactly 13 years ago. Since then, it has developed into one of the most important events in the German comics scene. Artistic direction this year was provided by Annina Brell, Hans Ebert, Madeleine Gebhardt and Sascha Hommer.

The main festival guest for 2019 was American graphic artist Nick Drnaso. Drnaso presented his graphic novel ‘Sabrina’, which was nominated for the Man Booker Prize in 2018, in an artist talk on the 28th of September. A selection of Dsarno’s original artwork was also on display in the main exhibition in the MOM Art Space. Other festival guests included the Canadian graphic artist Diane Obomsawin, the French art-duo Icinori, and the English graphic artist Lizz Lunney.

This year, for the first time, the German Comics Association took part as one of the festival’s sponsors. We provided funding for the panel discussion Comic Festivals: a Conversation, with participants Anna Haifisch (Millionaires Club, Leipzig), Lara Keilbart (Comicinvasion, Berlin), Hans Ebert (Hamburg Comics Festival) and Christine Auernheimer (International Comic Salon Erlangen).
