The Berlin Senate Administration has awarded comic scholarships to 18 comic artists for 2023. These work grants serve as support for the development or completion of comic projects.

Marlene Krause and Xueh Magrini Troll received two annual scholarships. The twelve four-month work grants were awarded to Patricia Thoma, Aike Arndt, Salam Alhassan, Ella Cohen (aka Ellakokoo), Christine Fahrenbruch (aka Rahel Süßkind), Jens Harder and Vincent Burmeister, Clayton Junior and Patu, Rinah Lang, Judy Moore, Henna-Marie Räsänen and Mikael Ross. Maria Castello Solbes, Christine Fetz and Sophia-Louise Hirsch were selected for the three eight-month work scholarships. Sheree Domingo Betz received the Comics/Graphic Novel residency scholarship in Paris 2023/24.

The independent jury included Gregor Dashuber, Itay Dvori, Anna Gabai, Lara Keilbart and Katharina Naujoks. They selected the work scholarships from 106 applications. There were 16 applications for the Paris residency scholarship.

Since the comic scholarship was introduced in Berlin, the comic association has recommended the jury members to the Senate Administration. Together with the cooperation partners and with financial support from the Senate, he organizes the presentation of the comic scholarship holders as part of the comic invasion and also the exhibition of the works of the supported comic artists in the Museum for Communication Berlin.

On May 6, 2023, this year’s comic scholarship holders from the State of Berlin will be presented as part of the ComicInvasionBerlin in the Museum für Kommunikation Berlin from 12 p.m. Dietrich W. Fenner, Head of Communications at the museum, will welcome you to the event, followed by the art and literature officer of the Senate Department for Culture and Europe, Lilian Engelmann, and Axel Halling, Chairman of the Board of the German Comic Association e.V., who will give welcoming remarks.

The exhibition with selected works by the scholarship holders will then open in the museum. It is from May 6th. Can be viewed on the 1st and 2nd floors of the museum until September 3rd, 2023. Cordial invitation!
